He had two sisters, Kate Maria and Ada Gertrude. The 12th York and Lancs were known as the 'Sheffield Pals'. Their formal title was the Sheffield City Battalion, They trained initially at Redmires. Arthur attacked the heavily defended village of Serre. The attack was a disaster. Casualties on the 1st July for the 12th Y & L were 17 officers and 495 men. A total of 512. Arthur's name is on the Thiepval Memorial which bears the names of more than 73,000 men who at one time had been listed as missing and have no known grave. John was wounded in action, June 1915, a gun shot wound to the knee. He went back to England to recover. Rejoining the 1st K.R.R. on the 19th April 1916. Eight days later, he was again wounded in action, this time a gun shot wound to the thigh. He never recovered and died of the wounds he'd received. John was a Fettler at Vickers. Maud remarried later in 1918 and became Mrs Thomas Connor. |

He had three brothers Herbert, Cecil, David and two sisters Margaret & Mary. His brothers also served. Herbert in the Army Service Corps, Service No. 11291. Cecil also served with the A.S.C. Service No. M2/156322. |
